And most home daily jobs also require you to start with a night driving shift because the more desirable day shifts go to the drivers with seniority; typically those with years and years on that account.

Their bills aren’t getting paid and so they call me back to ask if the job we talked about is still available. Sadly in most cases the answer ends up being no.

I mean I understand if you or someone you know had a bad experience once, or maybe you’ve heard rumors about someone who did. But just like any other national company, there are good employees and there are bad ones. It doesn’t necessarily reflect on the entire company and all their employees.
“The other side of that coin is that if it’s someone else that had a bad experience, then you’ve got to realize that you and I weren’t there. We don’t really know the actual circumstances around any situation because there are always two sides to every story, and you’re making important, life-changing calculations for your own life and career based on the single side of someone else’s story. And for every bad experience you’ve heard about, I can name ten drivers who love that carrier and brag about them all the time. If you have a bad experience with a Walmart employee we don’t generally boycott Walmart for the rest of our lives. And likewise, a lousy dispatcher from Houston or wherever isn’t going to be in (DRIVER’S AREA). In fact, they probably won’t be tolerated at that carrier for long at all if they’re making their drivers quit, or asking them to do something illegal…

“There are certain carriers who are willing to give first time drivers a seat, and problem drivers a second chance. And fortunately that’s the case, otherwise there would be no place for new drivers to cut their teeth and gain the experience they need to progress in their career. And there aren’t very many drivers out there who have a perfectly clean driving record with no dings whatsoever for as long as they’ve been in a truck.
“At the end of the day what I’m proposing is just a temporary job; not a marriage. This is a strong and reputable carrier with really nice late model trucks and they boast a pretty high retention rate. They keep their drivers out on the road earning with good, steady freight volume, and this job will provide you with an immediate opportunity to earn good money while adding more experience to your resume so that we can get you an even better job a few months down the road. You’ll be running Freightliner, Internationals or Kenworths, 2018 or newer with 10 speed transmissions. There are some automatics available if certain criteria are met (Driver has to have 12 months recent exp. with NO tickets and NO accidents, NO EXCEPTIONS.) and there may be a short wait for an available truck.
The trucks are assigned in orientation and can be taken home for time off as long as there is a secure parking place. (Drivers that live in the burrows are NOT allowed to take trucks home)
Shorthaul: The Driver can take the truck & trailer home if they live outside of a 50 mile radius of the terminal. If the Driver lives within a 50 mile radius, they will park at the terminal.
All trucks are governed at 64 mph and equipped with a 1500W invertor. They don’t have APU’s on the HAEI tractors. All of the company tractors are set up with an Opti-idle program, where the truck has an extra set of batteries to control the heating/cooling systems. The truck kicks on/off to keep the batteries from dying and keep the temp at the drivers desired setting.
There are no cameras in the truck. They also don’t come equipped with a fridge but there is room for one.
Riders are allowed after 30 days with a $22 monthly charge and the driver can’t have any accidents in the last 12 months. Ages 10-20 are only allowed in the summer months (June-August). Age 21 and up can ride year round.

ORIENTATION INFO (HLORT)
“Orientation will be 3 days long starting on Tuesday and ending on Thursday. Location will be decided upon hire based on equipment and orientation staff availability. You’ll be required to take dispatch out of orientation so if you have appointments, birthdays etc. you’ll need to delay starting until the next week. So that also means that if you bring your personal vehicle to orientation you’ll need to take it home on your next time off.
Travel will be by bus, train or flight, whichever Heartland chooses. If you choose to travel by rental car you’ll be reimbursed for amount Heartland would’ve spent getting you there. ORIENTATION DETAILS
ORIENTATION PAY IS EQUAL TO STATE MINIMUM WAGE, AND IS PAID ON THE EFS CARD SO THAT DRIVERS WILL HAVE ACCESSS TO THE MONEY WITHIN A COUPLE HOURS.
ORIENTATION STARTS ON MONDAYS OR WEDNESDAYS AND LASTS FOR 3 DAYS
A SINGLE OCCUPANCY ROOM ALONG WITH BREAKFAST, LUNCH, AND DINNER ARE PROVIDED FOR THE DRIVERS.
ORIENTATION LOCATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY. SO DEPENDING ON EQUIPMENT AND ORIENTATION STAFF, SOMETIMES DRIVERS ARE ASKED TO GO TO A LOCATION THAT IS NOT THE CLOSEST TO THEIR HOME. THE CARRIER WILL PROVIDE A BUS TICKET TO ORIENTATION, SO IT SHOULD NOT BE A HARDSHIP FOR A COMMERCIAL DRIVER TO TRAVEL. IF A DRIVER CHOOSES ANOTHER METHOD OF TRANSPORTATION, THEY WILL BE REIMBUSED UP TO THE PRICE OF THAT BUS TICKET. WE ENCOURAGE DRIVERS TO PACK LIGHT IN CASE OF TRAVELING TO A TRACTOR
Orientation Pay structure:
We will pay drivers for the hours spent in orientation class the minimum wage of the state in which class they attend – OR the federal minimum wage:

PHX, AZ – $8.05/hour – (ESTIMATED 193.20 for 3, 8 hour days)
JAX, FL – $8.05/hour – (ESTIMATED 193.20 for 3, 8 hour days)
ATL, GA – $7.25/hour (federal wage – GA wage is $5.15/hour) – (ESTIMATED 174.00 for 3, 8 hour days)
COL, PH – $8.10/hour– (ESTIMATED 194.40 for 3, 8 hour days)
OB, MS – $7.25/hour (federal wage – MS has no minimum wage) – (ESTIMATED 174.00 for 3, 8 hour days)
CHE, VA – $7.25/hour– (ESTIMATED 174.00 for 3, 8 hour days)
SEA, TX – $7.25/hour– (ESTIMATED 174.00 for 3, 8 hour days)
NL, IA – $7.25/hour– (ESTIMATED 174.00 for 3, 8 hour days)
Orientation instructors will send in timecards for each week’s classes with the class hours – Pay is for HOURLY for the hours in class NOT a flat amount for class!
Be sure to bring:
· Your CDL, Social Security card, and DOT long form physical (if you have it) and medical card
· Something to take notes with
· A voided check or deposit slip if you want direct deposit
· Location where you will park your truck and trailer on home time
· A copy of your DD214 if you have been active in the military
· 10 year work history, and documentation for any self-employment or 2 non family members we can call to verify any unemployment greater than 6 months.
· 3 references and 2 emergency contacts (name, address, & phone number)
· Social security #’s and birth dates for anyone you wish to cover on our medical insurance
· Gear to run a couple days after class before we get you home
· Loose fitting shorts and t-shirt for EFA testing (done on Wednesday)
· We will take you out for lunch and the hotel has a continental breakfast. You will need to have money for your evening meals.
Reminders:
· You can take a $150 advance after graduation.
· We will have you do a road test. It isn’t anything out of the ordinary but take it seriously, this is the first time we get to see you drive.
· Look professional i.e. No Cut-off shorts, tank tops or sweatpants (Clean, hemmed shorts, t-shirts and jeans are great. For men, hair must not be longer than your collar, no pony tails, and no jewelry above the neck.)
